DESCRIPTION
Kids Love Screens Nowadays
Children, especially the Alpha generation, love using smartphones because they've been around since before they were born. However, the educational world tends to be allergic to smartphones, as they're considered negative and distracting. Therefore, we're looking for an approach that can create a sustainable connection between smartphones and education.
PROCESS
UCD Approach
We used a User-Centered Design approach:
- Empathize: Interview kids who regularly use smartphone but often feel stuck in academics.
- User Persona: Create a profile of "The Students", someone who loves to use smartphone, either for studying, playing, etc.
- User Flow: Design the shortest possible flow: Open the app → Study → Study Progress
- Prototyping: Sketch the layout of the scan button and weekly progress chart to make navigation intuitive, and then proceed to high-fidelity design.
- Test: Using guerilla testing, ensure the design ease.
IMPACT
We use quiz-based learning, so children want to find out more and are encouraged, because gamification keeps them interested. Apart from that, there is also a summary to be studied by children who want to deepen the quiz material from Sipintar.
Sipintar's appearance is designed with bright, fun colors and playful microinteractions to appeal to its child user segment. The interface is also kept as minimal and simple as possible to avoid overloading children's cognitive abilities, in accordance with Hicks' Law.
